No satellite phones in Tihar: officials
The high-security Tihar Central Jail denied allegations on Thursday that some prisoners were using satellite telephones in the prison premises.
The high-security Tihar Central Jail denied allegations on Thursday that some prisoners were using satellite telephones in the prison premises.
A prisoner, Charanjeet, had Wednesday stated in a court that Abhishek Verma, accused of leaking classified information on the navy, and Romesh Sharma, alleged henchman of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, used satellite phones in the jail.
"The allegations made against the duo are completely baseless as mobile phones are not permitted inside the prison. Along with the other prisoners, their cells are searched twice a day," Tihar spokesperson Sunil Gupta told IANS.
Charanjeet is an accused in 11 cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and illegal possession of arms.
He also said that Verma and Sharma were in touch with Dawood Ibrahim and that he wanted to share this information with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigating officer probing the cases against Verma.
Gupta added: "(The allegations are) in retaliation to an earlier complaint filed against him by Verma. He created a false story to postpone any court action against him."
Verma had earlier alleged that his political and business rivals were plotting to kill him inside the jail.
He said in a March 9 letter to jail officials that four inmates - Charanjeet, Hari Krishan Sharma, Shiv Singh and Kishan Solanki attacked him with water laced with chemicals while he was returning to the jail from the Patiala House court.
