Traveling in Metro trains is going to be more comfortable for women. Very soon, each coach will have four seats marked ‘only for women’. So far, the Metro train compartments have two reserved seats marked for physically challenged and elderly passengers only.
The percentage of women especially students and working women traveling in Metro is very high. Though announcements are always made in Metro trains to vacate seats for women, men traveling in the trains rarely get up to make way for female passengers. A group of women from Prasad Nagar recently met Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and apprised her of the problems faced by them in the Metro.
The ever-accommodating Delhi CM called up Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) managing director E Sreedharan to look for a solution.
In each Metro coach, there will now be six reserved seats — four for women and two for disabled and elderly. A Metro coach with the driver’s cabin, on both ends of the train, has 43 seats and the normal coach has a capacity for 50 passengers.
“We have already ordered for stickers which will be posted in the coaches. We hope to implement the provision in 20-25 days,” DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
