Unconfirmed reports show that college newcomers appear being ragged, with seniors asking them to take off their shirts. It remains unclear, however, what made Thakur to strip.

Along with Thakur, two other NSUI office bearers have been suspended and all of them are believed to have been drunk at the function.

An NSUI statement issued Tuesday morning said Thakur has been suspended on the grounds of indiscipline. A post on NSUI’s official Facebook page has promised “stringent actions will be taken up against such individuals”.

A glut of social network messages has condemned Thakur’s behaviour at a time when the Congress is facing the Opposition on a host of issues including coal scam and cash-for-job taint on railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

He was re-elected as NSUI president in December 2012.

Thakur first gained prominence by leading a strong protest against the book of Rajiv Gandhi's alleged killer AG Perarivalan in May 2011. In November that year, he also organised a massive demonstration against senior BJP leader Atal Bihari Advani.

Suraj Thakur has been trending on Twitter since Monday.
