The government wants to make life simpler for couples who worry about their parents every time they venture out of the city. A short stay centre for the elderly - the first of its kind in the Capital - will come up in Vasant Kunj before year end.
Though there are several recreation centres run by the government, night stay is not allowed there. And while police check on senior citizens living alone, those with children don't enjoy the same privilege.
"We want to provide them a safe place where they can mingle with people their own age," said Kiran Walia, Delhi minister for social welfare.
"Land has been identified and other modalities such as the fee structure are being worked out."
The new centre will allow occupants to stay for up to two weeks, and make sure they get meals and medication on time.
Delhi, with its 10 lakh plus senior citizens, has witnessed crimes against them on a regular basis.
"An elderly couple was murdered in our area when their children were away. If such a facility had been available, lives could have been saved," said Harvinder Singh, 55, secretary of Lajpat Nagar III RWA.
"I don't like leaving my mother-in-law alone when I go out of town for work. Such a facility will come in handy," said 36-year-old Leena Singhal, a resident of Safdarjung Enclave.
