After being criticised for allegedly causing the death of a 66-year-old man, the Delhi Police was seen donning the role of a protector.

On Thursday morning, the police saved the lives of three men who were trapped inside a burning car at the Ghazipur flyover. The police said a Maruti Eeco car, which was coming from airport and was going towards Ghaziabad, was hit by a truck, which dragged it to another 200 metre before coming to halt.

“At the flyover, a truck, which was trying to overtake our car, rammed into us. The car immediately caught fire and we were unable to open the doors. We are alive only because of the Delhi Police personnel,” said Mumtaz Khan, who was driving the car.

Khan, 22, along with his two friends — Rahul Patil, 23 and Israr, 21 — was coming from the airport with a consignment which they had to deliver at Ghaziabad. A PCR call was made at 5:09 am and the van reached the spot at 5:12 am.

“Our van was posted under the flyover and we immediately rushed to the spot. I immediately took out an iron rod from the PCR van and broke the windowpane of the driver’s side,” Prem Veer, a head constable with the PCR said.

Three staff members of east district, who were posted at the nearby picket, also helped the PCR staff in the evacuation process. “Israr was sitting on the rear seat because of which he has suffered burn injuries. Khan and Patil had also suffered minor injuries,” Veer added.

Senior police officers said that they will announce a reward for the police personnel for saving the lives of the three men. The driver of the truck and truck has been impounded.
