The police, shaken after more than 24 bikers performed stunts on roads after Monday midnight and scared drivers and pedestrians, stopped and checked around 1,000 motorcycle riders.

“Since we are still in the process of completing the paper work related to the fines, it is difficult to say where the maximum number of violations happened. However, we can say that a no-toleration policy was followed against all two-wheeler drivers,” said a senior police officer.

The special police drive, however, angered a handful of motorists who had been booked on Tuesday evening. These bikers assembled outside the Tilak Marg police station and raised slogans against what they claimed was police high-handedness.

The district’s deputy commissioner of police and other senior officers reached the spot on Wednesday afternoon and held talks with the protesters in order to try and pacify them.

Police officers said the drive had been primarily triggered by a group of bikers performing stunts near India Gate for five hours on Monday evening, despite heavy police deployment in the area.

“There was adequate deployment of policemen but the bikers appeared around C-Heaxagon and performed stunts. One biker was injured when they were confronted by police personnel,” said an officer.
