“I found the house broken into around 7:30 pm when I returned home,” said Vijay (28), Sundaram’s son. The family owns the Madras Café, a south Indian restaurant in Green Park, south Delhi.

“They broke a 5-kg padlock on the iron grille, then broke the latch of the main wooder door and entered the house,” he said.

Once inside, the burglars broke open two iron cupboards and an iron locker to get to the family’s valuables. “They took only cash and gold, leaving silver, artificial jewellery and electronic items behind,” he said.

The assailants broke two locks on the back door, to escape with Rs 35,000 cash and about seven kgs of gold jewellery.

“We’ve registered a case and are investigating the matter,” said Vijay Singh, additional DCP I, (south) Delhi.
