Sharma went down fighting as bravely as he served police

Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who was responsible for elimination of scores of militants and criminals, went down fighting as bravely as he served the police force so far.

Considered an encounter specialist and posted with elite anti-terror squad Special Cell, Sharma was a highly decorated officer with seven gallantry medals to his credit, including a President's Medal.

The 41-year-old officer served the city police for 19 years before succumbing to bullet injuries he suffered in a fierce gunfight with five heavily-armed terrorists at a house in south Delhi this morning.

During his meritorious service, he was instrumental in the killing of 35 terrorists and the arrest of another 80 militants.

At least 40 inter-state gangsters also fell to the bullets of Sharma who was part of a team which meant terror for criminals. He also arrested another 129 gangsters.

Sharma, after a tip off, led a team of Special Cell to a house in Jamia Nagar this morning to nab five terrorists.

But the terrorists fired at the police squad injuring Sharma who was in the front. He sustained bullet injuries in abdomen, thigh and right arm.

A surgery on him could not save and he succumbed to his injuries after battling for life for about seven hours.

"We have lost our best man," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said.

Sharma is survived by wife and two young children has won seven gallantry medals including a President's medal this year.
