According to the plan being formulated at the headquarters, around 100 sanitation inspectors and supervisors will take pictures of garbage bins and dumps at fixed intervals using their mobile camera to give photographic evidence of whether or not they have been cleaned.

The pictures taken by the inspectors will be sent to the control room where they will be monitored by a team. Any discrepancy in the sanitation situation will be reported with the senior officials and the concerned sanitation worker or garbage collection agency will be hauled up.

By doing so, the corporation expects a timely removal of garbage.

"It will be a new way of ensuring efficient sanitation in our area," said Savita Gupta, Mayor of the corporation.

The project in its pilot run will only monitor sanitation, however, considering the scope of the new technology, it can also be used to monitor encroachments and illegal constructions in the future.

Giving details of the project, a senior official said that they will hire a company to install special software in the phones so that it is connected to the control room. The pictures taken will contain the time and date of the shot taken to prevent any tampering.

"It is difficult for the officials in the headquarters to monitor the cleanliness of the roads and garbage bins as they cannot personally visit each one of them. With the phones, that problem will be solved," he said. The budget is yet to be decided.

The New Delhi Municipal Council has already introduced the project in its jurisdiction.

At fixed times during the day, the supervisors click photographs of their sites and send them to the headquarters.

Upon observing the progress of the work, which will be discernible on comparing the photographs, the officials back in agency's headquarters will direct the ground staff.
