A month after they underwent the sports trial and two days before the admission process at Delhi University is set to close, those who have qualified are yet to get admission. The college’s special admissions committee has received nine complaints from applicants regarding the admission under this category.

Three of these complaints are regarding the marking of certificates while the remaining six are allegedly complaints of a “serious nature”.

“The complainants have questioned the marks and the process of the trials held. One of the applicants under basketball has been marked for playing in a position he did not actually play in during the trials. There are two football players who have played for the Subroto Cup but have managed to get only 18 out of 50 in the trials,” said a member of the committee, who did not want to be named.

According to other college staff, the applicants have alleged that some experts asked them to pay Rs 9 lakh to get their names in the final list. These claims, however, have not been verified.

The experts for the trials are selected by the university. Video recording of the trials is also done to ensure transparency. After the complaints were received, the footage was sent to the Delhi University Sports Council for review. The council is yet to get back. But the delay and the controversy have made applicants shy away from taking admission at KMC.

“Each year, we invite 41 applicants in the main list and 40 in the waiting list. This year, only 30 applicants turned up from both lists. How long will the candidates wait? All the good candidates have moved on to other colleges and we are getting candidates from the waiting list only,” a teacher said on condition of anonymity.

The Delhi University Sports Council, meanwhile, is in the process of looking at the video footage and has not found any evidence of wrongdoing so far.

“As for the complaints, the college should try to resolve it at their level. If they can’t do that, they should forward them to us. We have not received any such complaints so far,” said CS Dubey, chairperson, Delhi University Sports Council.
