Stephen’s teachers for equal quota
The heads of departments at St Stephen’s College have written to the Supreme Council, suggesting that the quota for the social sector should be equally distributed between the Christian and non-Christian category.
The heads of departments at St Stephen’s College have written to the Supreme Council, suggesting that the quota for the social sector (including SC, ST, physically handicapped) should be equally distributed between the Christian and non-Christian category.
The college also takes in five per cent students over its total intake under sports quota. Seats under this category, too, be divided in equal halves between Christian and non-Christian students, teachers have demanded.
This means that general category seats will remain constant at 40 per cent, while the existing 20 per cent quota for the social sector will be divided in two halves — 10 per cent will be for non-Christian candidates, the other 10 per cent will be adjusted within the 50 per cent Christian quota.
“There are Dalit Christians, ST Christians and handicapped Christians. We are suggesting that instead of cutting into the quota for non-Christian social sector, these categories should be adjusted within the 50 per cent reserved for Christians,” said a highly placed source. “So of the 10 per cent social sector quota for Christian students, 2.5 per cent will be reserved for Christian sportspersons,” the source said.
In the same way, it is proposed that the college takes in 7.5 per cent non-Christian SC/ST/handicapped applicants and 2.5 per cent non-Christian sportspersons under the 10 per cent seats reserved for non-Christian social sector quota.
