A recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Saxena did his graduation from JLN Medical College, Ajmer and MS (Gen Surgery) from Mumbai University.

He was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in the rank of Surgeon Sub Lieutenant on October 28, 1971, an official release said here.
Before taking over reins of the Medical Branch of the Indian Navy, the Vice Admiral has served as the Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces). A super-specialist in uro surgery, he has some 250 renal transplants to his credit.
