Survey to check cell phone radiation level on cards
The ill effects of cell phones and mobile tower radiation have prompted the Delhi government to conduct a survey to check radiation level in the city.
The ill effects of cell phones and mobile tower radiation have prompted the Delhi government to conduct a survey to check radiation level in the city. Health minister AK Walia called a meeting in this regard on Wednesday.
In the meeting, a private company made a presentation, claiming that it had certain equipment which can mitigate the ill effects of cell phone radiation.
“A survey will be carried out to asses the radiation level in the city. Certain areas will be identified for this purpose. We have formulated some guidelines and will be discussing the matter with the Union ministry of telecom,” said Walia.
There are a total of 5,364 cell phone towers in the Capital. Many of these have been set up without obtaining permission from the civic agencies.
The government is looking into the possibility of setting up cell phone towers in the periphery of the city. These towers will provide service to the entire region. Once the Union ministry gives its permission cell phone providers will no longer have to install individual towers on rooftops, as is the case at present.
Besides this, the government plans to review the cell phone installation policy.
Under this, a number of towers might be removed if not needed. "We will ascertain if there is a requirement for so many cell phone towers. Depending on our assessment, we will start the process of removing them," said a senior Delhi government official.
Recently, the city government had decided to write to the Union home ministry regarding formulation of common guidelines for the installation of mobile towers in Delhi .
The health department had said that it had received a number of complaints regarding the harmful effects of radiation emitting from mobile towers.
