Police had to use teargas shells to bring the situation under control. Police said the incident started around 11am when Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Paramjit Singh Sarna’s brother, Harvinder Singh Sarna, was allegedly assaulted by two relatives and supporters of a local leader.

A police officer attributed the clash to an old dispute between the leader and the DSGMC over a plot where Guru Harkishan Hospital has been constructed. The DSGMC runs the hospital along with a private hospital.

Harvinder Singh Sarna said he along with his friend was going to the gurdwara when the brother and nephew of the local leader started abusing him. “They threw a stone on me, which hit my head, but I was not injured. Then, the two along with their supporters assaulted me. My driver Peter saved my life and pushed me inside the car. They broke the windowpanes of my car before some people from the gurdwara came to our rescue,” said Sarna, adding that he has lodged a complaint against them at the Sunlight Colony police station.

Akbar, a local, said the matter was pacified, but the clash ensued again when more than 100 supporters of the leader, along with residents from Bhogal, gathered outside the gurdwara and started throwing bottles on its premises. “This infuriated people from the other group and they too resorted to stone-pelting. More than 200 policemen were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Police had to use teargas shells to disperse the mob,” he said.

Ajay Choudhary, ACP (southeast), said the police had received complaints from both the groups. Despite several attempts, the local leader was not available for comment.
