A forty two-year-old constable was hit by a speeding car on Outer Ring Road in Shalimar Bagh on early Thursday morning. Doctors fear that his legs have to be amputated, reports Vijaita Singh.
Constable Joginder Singh may not be able to walk again ever. Doctors fear that his legs have to be amputated.
Forty two-year-old Joginder was hit by a speeding car on Outer Ring Road in Shalimar Bagh on early Thursday morning. Joginder was posted at a police picket and was conducting routine night checks when the car rammed him, dragging him for about 30 metres before coming to a halt.
This is the seventh incident since the beginning of this year when a traffic policeman has been assaulted on duty.
“People are taking law in their hands. Even for minor traffic violations, they don’t want to pay fine, get violent and beat up policemen on duty,” said S.N. Srivastava, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
For Thursday’s incident the police have booked the driver, identified as Salman (22), for attempt to murder, assault or criminal force on a public servant and obstructing him/her from discharging duty. Police said the accused was not drunk at the time of the incident.
Around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Salman was asked to stop at a police picket on Outer Ring Road in Haiderpur area of Shalimar Bagh. Salman, a taxi driver who was returning to Dwarka after dropping a passenger, slowed down when he saw the policemen. When Constable Joginder went near his Alto car, he sped and the victim was dragged for about 30 metres on the bonnet of the car.
The rest of the policemen chased the car and arrested him. Joginder was rushed to nearby Maharaja Agrasen Hospital where he was admitted with critical injuries. Doctors said that his left leg has been badly damaged and he has not regained consciousness yet.
“We checked about his condition on Thursday morning. He is in the ICU and is still unconscious. Doctors say that they might have to amputate his leg,” said a senior police officer.
A criminal case was registered against the driver on the complaint of Traffic Inspector Dharmendra Singh at Shalimar Bagh Police Station.
In March this year, Delhi Traffic Police had started prosecuting motorists who argued with traffic policemen when they were stopped for certain violations. Around 300 people have been prosecuted under Section 132 and 179 of Motor Vehicle Act (Disobeying Lawful Directions) this year.
Last month, a Constable was critically injured after a speeding car knocked him down at the South Extension underpass in south Delhi.
