The incident happened when Seema Sharma, a resident of Kishanganj, was trying to board the moving Panipat-bound passenger train at 8:32am.

“Her train started before she could reach the platform. She tried boarding the moving train and slipped into the gap between the train and the platform. The train was immediately stopped but enough damage was done till then,” said Raghav, an eyewitness, who sells books at the station.

Sharma was stuck between the train and the platform for more than 20 minutes before railway officials broke the platform to get her out. She was sent to the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital at 9am.

“She died around 9:45am at the hospital. Her lower portion was completely crushed. She always used to reach the station before time but on Monday, we got a little late and that took her life,” said Sharma’s husband Vikas, who works with a public telecom operator.

Sharma, who worked as an Anganbadi worker in Khera Kalan in North-West Delhi, used to board a local train from Sabzi Mandi station daily. Khela Kalan is almost 40 minutes away from the Sabzi Mandi station by train.

“Her husband dropped her at the station at 8:30am. As she was in a hurry, she tried boarding a moving train. Her husband who had just got out from the station came back after hearing people shout. The PCR van reached the spot immediately and the ambulance also arrived within 15 minutes of the incident,” said a senior police officer.

Sharma is survived by her husband and two kids — a three-year-old boy and a five- year-old girl.

“The rescue operation started immediately after the train was stopped. The platform was broken and within 20 minutes, she was sent to the hospital where she was declared dead. We’ll bring out a report on this incident,” said Ashwani Lohani, divisional railway manager (Delhi), northern railways.

An SDM enquiry has also been ordered into the incident.

“According to rules if a married woman dies in a marriage of less than seven years, an SDM enquiry has to be initiated and only after that a case is registered,” said BS Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railway).
