They are planning to write to the board authorities for re-evaluation of marks, particularly of English (functional).

Those schools which offered English (functional) as an elective instead of English (core) witnessed students scoring much less than expected, bringing down the overall percentages of students.

“The paper was based on the new syllabus introduced last year,” said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School, Khar. “But the board had not given proper guidelines to prepare for it. We will ask the board to re-evaluate the result.”

Those schools offering English (core) as an elective had good overall results but saw a rise in the number of students failing in only one subject. These students have to appear for compartment exams which will be held on July 16.

The number of students who will appear in compartment exams in Chennai region, which includes Mumbai, has increased to 3,447 from last year’s 2,699.

“We had one student who was placed in compartment,” said Girija Singh, Navy Children School, Colaba. “But, results are good with 37.33% scoring above 90% and 33.33% scoring between 80 and 89%.”

Shaesta Mallick from the school scored the highest in humanities with 96.6%.

Similarly, Kalyan’s Birla School had one student placed in compartment for failing in maths. “Physics was tough and our school’s highest percentage also fell to 94.2% from last year’s 96%,” said Ranjna Jangra, principal.

DAV Public School in New Panvel was one of the few schools which saw a rise in average scores compared to last year. “Our results were better than last year,” said Jayashree Khandekar, principal of DAV Public School. The average scores of the school in English, physics and mathematics were higher than last year.
