Police officers said the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education had decided to conduct the HSC exam offline after the scare of Covid-19 decreased. For the exam, a college in Vile Parle was selected as a centre.

On Saturday morning when the students entered examination hall, the supervisor noticed a female student was absent. After the exam started, the supervisor heard some noise from the bathroom near the examination hall, sometime before the scheduled exam time.

When he went there to check, he found the female student watching something on her WhatsApp, said a police officer. On checking her phone, the supervisor found that she was looking into the questions of Chemistry subject and formulas that appeared in the question paper, he added.

The supervisor then informed the Board about the episode. After a few minutes the members of the Board arrived at the centre. The Board informed the Vile Parle police about the paper leak.

After registering a complaint, the Vile Parel police began their investigation. On questioning the girl they found out that the WhatsApp message was sent by Yadav.

Police officers on Saturday evening went to Malad to arrest Yadav and found out that after sending the paper to the female student, 17 more students had received it through a WhatsApp group created by Yadav.

"We have arrested Yadav for the paper leak under relevant sections of Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016," said the officer.

Yadav was produced before a metropolitan magistrate court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody.

The police have also questioned minors involved in the paper leak and are now trying to find the source from where Yadav had got the question paper and whether he had leaked any other papers before this.
