NEP 2020 aims to increase gross enrolment ratio in higher education to 50% by 2035: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with the finalists of the hackathon through video conferencing. Students from various colleges including The hackathon is being organised by the HRD ministry’s All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Persistent Systems and i4c. The Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2020 (Software) will be held from August 1 to 3. The hackathon is a nationwide initiative to provide students with a platform to solve some of the pressing problems people face in daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem-solving.Students from Shri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Tamil Nadu, MLR Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, JECRC University, Jaipur, Graphic Era University, Dehradun and Chandigarh Engineering College interacted with the PM and discussed their innovative ideas. PM Modi later spoke about the New Education Policy that was launched on July 29. He said that it took 5 years to plan and draft the NEP 2020. Opinions and suggestions were taken from people in different sectors, before drafting the policy. He said the new education policy is people-centric and future- centric. Talking about the flexibility to chose subjects from any stream, he said, it was much needed. “Earlier, students were not allowed to chose subjects as per their interest but the NEP provides the flexibility to an arts students to chose Maths along with the humanities subjects or a Science student can chose to study History along with the other subjects. He also talked about the introduction of regional and local languages in primary schools. He said that majority of the developed countries instruct their students in their own local language.
