The high court, which took up an emergency petition filed by AP Child Rights Association, an NGO working for children’s rights, gave time to the board till Monday next to disclose how much time it would take for completion of revaluation.

The court did not agree with the contention of the board’s counsel that it would take two months’ time to complete the process as more than three lakh students failed in both the years of intermediate examination.

The NGO moved the high court, seeking direction to the government to order re-valuation of all answer sheets and also sought a thorough probe into the lapses on the part of the board.

As per the results declared by the Intermediate board on April 18, 4,09,133 students appeared for the first year examination in regular format of which 2,47,407 students passed with a pass percentage of 60.5 per cent. In the second year, as many as 3,82,534 students appeared on regular basis and of them, 2,47,755 (64.8 per cent) passed the examination.

The results came a shocker to thousands of students as large scale goofs-up were detected in the marks lists. Many bright students who scored over 90 per cent of marks in the first year, failed in the second year. There were large scale complaints from students that they were awarded zero, one or two marks in the subjects.

At least 16 Intermediate students committed suicide in different parts of the state in the last four days unable to bear the shock of their failure in the examination. This led to large scale agitations by the students and their parents, supported by various student unions, social organisations and opposition parties.

For the last two days, they have been agitating in front of the the BIE office at Nampally, leading to law and order breakdown. The police resorted to cane charge and arrested several students, parents and political leaders.

The opposition parties have alleged that the BIE had entrusted the task of conducting the examinations, including tabulation of marks and preparation of marks sheets to a private software company Globarena Technologies, which allegedly had no prior experience of conducting examinations of such a magnitude. “Apparently, it has the blessings of bigwigs in the Telangana government. We demand a thorough inquiry into the whole scam,” Telangana PCC spokesman Guduru Narayana Reddy said.

BIE secretary A Ashok admitted that there were some lapses in declaring the results. He, however, assured students that the discrepancies would be rectified. The board extended the last date for application for recounting and re-verification up to April 27.

Meanwhile, the Telangana government ordered an inquiry by a three-member committee headed by G T Venkateswar Rao, Managing Director, Telangana State Technological Service, to probe into the alleged lapses in the Intermediate examination results. The committee was asked to submit report in three days.

Education Minister G Jagadish Reddy, however, accused the Opposition of ‘politicizing’ the issue of intermediate results and causing panic among students and parents. “We shall take stern action against those responsible for the lapses, if any, once the experts committee submits its report,” he said and assured that all the students would be rendered justice, if there were any goofs-up.
