Aamir: Politician in the making?

Aamir Khan, at a Republic Day function in Mumbai. The actor’s rally-style turnout and actions at the event — folding hands, calling out to the public and receiving flower garlands — made many an onlooker wonder if, like actors Govinda and Sanjay Dutt, he too, plans to join politics sometime soon.
“It was a scene straight out of
Rajneeti
,” says Harsha Ajgaonkar, who caught a glimpse of the 45-year-old and his wife Kiran Rao at the celebrations, also a promotional event for Aamir’s latest flick,
Dhobi Ghat
, directed by Rao.
Khan’s contemporaries think he fits the bill perfectly. “He has all the qualities of a good
neta
. He is very focussed, knows what he wants and how to get it,” says actor Gul Panag. “He must give politics a shot. He’ll win hands down,” says filmmaker Kunal Kohli. Actor Pooja Bedi, his co-star in the hit film,
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
, says, “He’s good at marketing, and has integrity.”
But, even though Khan has been associated with social causes, and he asked political parties to field “young, dynamic and honest” candidates during the 2009 elections, he has always maintained that he has no plans to enter politics. “No, he has no intentions of becoming a
neta
,” confirmed his spokesperson.
