Sen is one of the most accomplished directors in Bengal with Satyajit Ray and Ritiwik Ghatak. He has made over 30 films besides scripting and producing several films in 50 years of his career.

The Lifetime Achievement award in Osian has been constituted for the first time and Sen is the first director to be honoured.

After accepting the award Sen said, "I feel very happy but I don't know whether I deserve this award or should I do some more to satisfy the people who have given me the award.

"I have a feeling that perhaps I could do something more than this. Nothing is the last word in aesthetics. It can grow."

The director's desire to experiment and revise has not changed over the years and that's what keeps him going. Sen said, "I wish I were to make many more films but as Chaplin had said I go when I go."

"But Before that ideas pop into my head and I do not know where it all will end," he said.

It has been quite an eventful journey for a man who came into filmmaking by chance. Mrinal's interest in filmmaking started after he came upon a book on film aesthetics.

The seasoned filmmaker said, "Once again I am reborn. Though I receive this award with all the dignity and I am very happy to receive it but it makes me a bit uncomfortable," the modesty is disarming as awards has always followed him in his five decade old career.

Sen has already been awarded Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest distinction given for contribution in the field of Indian cinema. He is also the recipient of French government's Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters award.
