Eat, pray, lounge

In Bandra, spend the day shopping, feasting and partying or chatting by the sea.

Whether you’re looking for a cocktail or a cocktail dress, Bandra’s the place to be. The Linking Road and Hill Road shopping areas guarantee you’ll find what you want, in the price range you want — anything from shoes for Rs 100 to skinny jeans for Rs 5,000. If you’d rather eat than shop, you can head to Hearsch bakery for a juicy burger, to be eaten sitting on a rock behind the small, 100-year-old landmark establishment, among shady trees and a few mewling kittens. “I love Hearsch bakery. It reminds me of school and all my years in Bandra,” says college student Rebecca D’Souza, 17, who has grown up here. “Bandra is an awesome place. It exudes an amazing vibe and you never feel dull here. There’s so much to do that suits every personality. It ticks all my boxes for an ideal suburb.”

Numerous cafés, including Gostana (great burgers, free wifi, vintage posters on the walls and books and board games to help you kill time), Cinnabon and Mocha Mojo (foosball table, board games) offer great ambience, music, and, of course, coffee.

For more serious grub, you can head to any of the scores of eateries of various price ranges. Café Goa and Soul Fry at Pali Naka serve great Goan food, Candies (Pali Hill and Reclamation) offer great ambience too. If you’re looking to have a special evening, head to candle-lit Out of the Blue or Bungalow 9 or seaside Molto Bello for a meal you won’t soon forget — and won’t have to take a personal loan to pay for either.

“Bandra has awesome food joints; the variety is spectacular,” says Rohan Gandhy, 22, a foodie, food blogger and Bandra resident. “You can easily spend an entire day in Bandra without knowing how the time flew by.” For dessert after your feast, head to Brownie Point (Ambedkar Road), Theobroma (Linking Road), Fro Yo (Waterfield Road) or Cocoberry (Pali Naka) — the first two are perfect for chocoholics; the latter two for those watching the calories.

Or you can just gorge and then work off some of those calories at Joggers Park, off Carter Road. At a cost of Rs 2 for adults and Rs 1 for children, you can spend all day in lush, sea-facing greenery, playing catch, chatting, reading, watching the waves or, well, jogging. By evening, as the bustle on the streets turns to chaos, retreat to the picturesque, 100-year-old Mount Mary Church for a quiet prayer — or just to admire its quasi-Gothic façade.

Merrymakers can choose from a variety of buzzing nightspots — including 18-year-old Toto’s Garage with its Volkswagen Beetle dangling from the ceiling, Hawaiian Shack with its boatshaped bar, Escobar with its 77-ft-long bar (the longest in India!), Firangi Paani with its pub ambience and draught beer, and wine bar The Den.

And what better way to leave Bandra than via the glittering sealink. Remember not to drive if you’ve been celebrating No TV Day with a tipple, though. 1. Shop till you drop at Linking Road, where you can get shoes for just Rs 100.

2. Spend the evening watching the sun set over the ocean at Joggers Park.

3. Sample the tasty food and great ambience at Candies. 4. Get a drink with friends at Bandra’s iconic Toto’s Garage pub, where you can also check out the Maruti van DJ console and the Volkswagen Beetle dangling from the ceiling.

5. Dine at Bungalow 9, a sprawling old bungalow-turnedrestaurant that still sports a wooden balcony and sloping roof.
