With so much violence raging all across the world, Gandhi was never so relevant as he is today. On his 141st birth anniversary, go to his samadhi at Rajghat, near Dilli Gate, and contemplate his life in the incredibly green mausoleum. Also, visit the Gandhi museum located right across the road, which has a free library.

Let the Games begin
Commonwealth Games — October 3-4

Bollywood celebrities, famous athletes and, (if you really care) Prince Charles will be present at one of the most important international events that India is hosting this decade. The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will take place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 3.

Don’t miss out on the performances by Bollywood biggies, including music composer AR Rehman. Katrina Kaif is likely to perform a dance. Tickets are available at the Games’s official website:

Celebrating virtue
Ramlila — October 8-17

Ramlila, north India’s most popular folk theatre form, will be hosted almost in every lane of Delhi. However, if you want to watch some of the biggest Ramlila in the city, then you should go to Old Delhi. The four biggest Ramlilas are organised in the Chandni Chowk area, just adjacent to each other. Actors from as far as Moradabad and Sahranpur (Uttar Pradesh) come to the city to act in these Ramlilas. Visit this area to get a taste of the popular delicacies of Old Delhi, such as chaat, golgappa and dahi bhallay, among other mouth-watering street snacks. The Ashok Vihar Ramlila is worth a visit too. Last year, it burnt a 100-feet tall effigy of Raavan.

Indian festival
Durga Puja — October 14-17

Get ready for four days of festivities. It doesn’t matter whether if you are a Bengali or not. There will be dhal (drum) and chameli flowers; fish cutlets and rosogollas; dhoti-kurtas and Jamdani saris. Traditionally, an annual Bengali festival, Durga Puja has become an intrinsic part of Delhi’s multi-ethnic culture. While the Bengali-dominated Chittranjan Park area’s pujas (around 11 pandals) pull the maximum crowd, there are others that are not to be missed.

The Kashmere Gate Durga Puja, for instance, is the oldest in the city. It started more than a century ago. Take a Metro and get down at the Civil Lines Metro station.

From here, the venue is just walkable distance. While hopping from one pandal to another, don’t miss out on the food served in various stalls. Try out the authentic Bengali street food, such as fish roll, mutton cutlets, veg chop and mishti.

Big College Fest
IIT Delhi Annual Fest, Rendezvous — October 19-24

This is the biggest and the most popular campus festival not only in the city, but colleges across the country. More than 350 colleges participate in this fest. Celebrity performances and the popular rock show called

Blitzkrieg

are the star attractions every year. Don’t miss out on visiting it this year, as it is a Golden Jubilee celebration.
