And the fashion goes to..

Just for their sheer finesse and detailing, Ritu Kumar’s saris are a must-invest-in for every girl, wedding or no wedding. Lalita Iyer on the must-haves in the closets of every girl and guy...

Okay I am a classic-with-a- twist kind of a girl and no fashion victim by any measure. So you will never find me in one-shoulder tops, cigarette pants, crocs, Anarkalis or bubble dresses. It’s too much a waste of time keeping track of fashion, and too outré.

Here’s my list:
Ritu Sari: So I am still waiting for the curves that will make draping this on me worthwhile, but just for their sheer finesse and detailing, Ritu Kumar’s saris are a must-invest-in for every girl, wedding or no wedding.

Roopa Vohra’s jewellery: Don’t let the puritans sway you with “glass and stones have no value, look how little gold there is”, when you go shopping at her jewellery store in Juhu. One piece of Roopa Vohra’s ancient Thewa style jewellery is worth it. I bought a green-red in gold Thewa set for my wedding, and I can’t stop gazing at it at any given chance, even though the mother still asks me “Is it real?”

Little black dress: This one I actually scoured the market for — and tried everything from Anita Dongre, Mango and Espirit to Ensemble, Ananya, Barefoot and Oak Tree, and finally found what I wanted (though not as little as I wanted it to be) at Vitamin K and Taxxi store in Bandra.

Chanel No 5: If you ever want to take up someone on how much they really love you when they ask you, “Do you want anything from duty-free?” ask them for a Chanel No 5 perfume, a timeless feminine classic. I still don’t have mine. Someone had better be reading this.

Ann Taylor jacket: Classic, but updated, this is a thing to go scouring for the best bargains when you are in firangiland. Even if you have innumerable jacketless days back home, it’s worth the wait for that fine moment when you pull it out of your closet.

Okay, even boys deserve some space. I’ll give them three items:
A Narendra Kumar jacket: It’s what the husband bought for the wedding, although it cost as much as my entire trousseau.
A pair of Levis 501s: if you have the frame and the ass to carry it off (the husband thankfully does).
A Kenneth Cole watch: it actually makes you want to look at the time
