Fashion hoopla

For designers the front-row attendance is more important than the fall of the garment they are going to show on the ramp, writes Jaydeep Ghosh.

I will keep this nice and short because by the time you read this, we will be midway through the Fall/Winter 2008 Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and you would be saying, “Oh no, not another piece on fashion!” But hey, fashion affects us all or why else would a nouveau-riche couple make sure that their new born is wearing a Burberry or Gucci when people come for muh-dikhai?

The Fashion Week also does good to many bored ladies. It gives them a semblance of purpose. Designers chase them to fill their front-rows because for many, the front-row attendance is more important than the fall of the garment they are going to show on the ramp.

Designers, who are weak in social networking, at times fall for the front-row gimmick and hire specialists at mind-numbing costs to fill the revered seats. The usual practise is to hire a socialite who charges a bomb to get her fellow socialites to the show.

Some do it with a little more grace and hire a socialite who hosts a pre-show champagne soiree to muster up the crowd. What say you? Doesn’t Fashion Week gainfully employ the lunching ladies, who for a change can buy bags with their own hard-earned money?
