From Rihanna to Priyanka Chopra: All the quirk and drama at MET Gala 2017
This year’s theme was based on iconic Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo’s designs. Here’s how celebrities like Rihanna, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Jennifer Lopez and others took on this year’s inspiration.
It’s the annual quirk fest that has your Instagram feed going in to tizzy mode. And, version 2017 of the fundraising gala, helmed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, was no different. The themes in the past have been a many . From China: Through The Looking Glass (2015) to last year’s Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology — the thematic tone of the MET ball has always given celebrities a chance to show off unfettered creativity. This year, while many celebrities dressed justlike they do on any other red carpet, others (a la Rihanna) stuck to the theme — Rei Kawakubo. Wondering who that is? The Japanese designer is the second living fashion icon to be immortalised by the museum by the way of the theme, after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 . Kawakubo is the Tokyo and Paris based designer who is known for shunning the limelight and founding two gamechanging brands in fashion — label Comme des Garçons and retail-hub Dover Street Market, which started in London. Here are some of the looks that stood out from this year’s MET Gala:
Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren
She’s not new to Hollywood’s hottest red carpets and PeeCee made for quite a confident picture at her MET Gala debut. The toffee-hued trench coat dress by Ralph Lauren gave away the perfect dose of drama thanks to the trailing train, and the contrasting boots added some edge, something that Kawakubo is known for.
Deepika Padukone in Tommy Hilfiger
Deepika played it dainty in her vanilla-hued Tommy Hilfiger dress. While there’s no doubt that she looks pretty-perfect, we did missthe quirk and out-of-the-box style that you’d expect at the MET Gala, especially when Kawakubo is your inspiration.
Katy Perry in Maison Margiela
Trust Katy Perry to make a statement. The singer, who is known to experiment with her look often, did not disappoint in her Maison Margiela by John Galliano number. The all-red chiffon gown was completed with a sheer veil and a headpiece.
Jennifer Lopez in Valentino
This look left us surprised! It’s not often that singer Jennifer Lopez decides to play it romantic, and the MET Gala, of all red carpets, seemed like a strange place to do it. JLo walked the red carpet in a custom-made Valentino dress.
Nicki Minaj in H&M
She’s played it well! While one wouldn’t expect a high-street spotting at such a red carpet outing, Minaj slayed it with her H&M dress, complete with a floor-sweeping train. And, don’t miss that statement cinching belt , with Rei Kawakubo‘s face on it. Now that’s a literal tribute!
Rihanna in Comme des Garçons
Rihanna made the perfect thematic statement by taking on this creation by Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons. The dress was completely on-point with exaggerated three-dimensional floral-themed ruffles. She completed the look with red lace-up heels.
Janelle Monáe in Ralph and Russo
She’s known for her love for structure and volume, and Janelle continued to champion that style at the MET Gala. Wearing a Ralph and Russo frou-frou dress high on drama, her version of quirk went well with the spirit of the event.
Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger
All nude, everything — that seemed to be the style moodboard that Gigi Hadid picked from, for her MET Gala look. Fishnet stockings added a streak of sexy, while the on-point beauty look, complete with exaggerated graphic eyeliner, gave us all the feels.
