As the year kicks off and actors inspire new trends with their on-screen attire, here are five recent films that made style statements. Over the years, the silver screen has inspired a number of fashion trends. From Sadhna’s iconic haircut in the ’60s to Kareena Kapoor’s T-shirt over patialas in Jab We Met (2007). We get Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue India, to pick out the most striking ones in the past five years.

Band Baaja Baraat (2010)
Anushka Sharma in snug short kurtis and generous patialas brought the flavour of Punjab to our wardrobes. Unapologetically bright, vibrant and vivacious, with a distinct Bunty Aur Babli (2005) hangover, the film raised a sartorial toast to the ubiquitous salwar kurti.

Aisha (2010)

For me and for every girl whose 20-something self was inspired by Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz in Clueless, this film is a throwback to those times. Preppy, pretty, lady-like fashion this is the film that made Sonam Kapoor Bollywood’s fiercest proponent and purveyor of style.

Student of the Year (2012)
Gossip Girl met Pretty Little Liars with Alia Bhatt’s Shanaya, who made us wish we could go back to school. Her wardrobe comprised labels ranging from Alice + Olivia and Manish Malhotra to Hermès, her look was young, glamorous and cute to the core.

English Vinglish (2012)
Can you take a cotton sari, a humble bindi, and a trench coat and rock the look? English Vinglish showed us that you certainly can. As Sridevi appeared shot after shot in a delicious palette of cotton saris, with her hair held back in an unassuming braid, accessorised by a bindi and those expressive eyes, it was easy to fall in love with her crisp, clean and demure housewife, Shashi, as she embarked upon an interesting personal journey in America.

Cocktail (2012)
The ultimate makeover film. Take a good girl like Deepika Padukone, and put her in leather skirts, men’s shirts and itsy bikinis. Give her bed head, and a bronze glow and you have a look most of us dream of, but very few dare.

(As told by Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue India to Shweta Mehta)
