Saini, a 17-year-old golfer who suffers from autism and studies at a private school in Gurgaon, was presented the Bheem award on February 19, 2016, by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for outstanding achievement.

Nisha Saini, a 31-year-old legal-cum-probation officer of the district child welfare office, was felicitated for her meritorious work.

She had prepared the special assessment report on whether the juvenile, accused of murdering a student of a private school last year, should be treated as an adult or not. Her report led to the juvenile justice board deciding to treat the juvenile as an adult in the case.

CRPF Constable Jaswant Singh, a resident of Farrukhnagar, who died during a militant attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, on August 26, 2017, was also felicitated with a posthumous award. The award was received by his wife Rekha Yadav.

The day’s event commenced with tributes to martyrs and freedom fighters, followed by the unfurling of the national flag and singing of the national anthem, a parade, cultural events and the felicitation ceremony.

The road safety skit was aimed at encouraging the people to abide by basic road safety rules and traffic norms.

The education minister highlighted the achievements of the state government since it took over in 2014.

Sharma said since the launch of the Beti Padhao Beti Bachao campaign, Haryana’s sex ratio has jumped from 834 to 914.

He also highlighted the state’s growing influence in Bollywood and cited the example of movie Dangal, which is based on the lives of Haryana’s wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat and Salman Khan’s Sultan.

Sharma also declared January 27 a public holiday for all schools and all police officers who participated in the parade.

“All government and private schools in the city will have a holiday on Saturday. All 4,100 children who participated in the Republic Day celebrations will be given a bag, a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a diary and a pen as gifts,” Sharma said.

For the purpose of beautifying schools, four schools in the district were also awarded cheques of Rs 1 lakh each by the education minister. These included the senior state secondary school in Basai, government high school in Kakrola, state secondary school in Farrukhnagar and state primary school in Sector 49.

Two residential societies, GurgaonOne and Nirvana country, were also awarded for best practices in waste management.

GurgaonOne, a condominium on old Delhi-Gurgaon Road in Sector 22, is spread across 11 acres and has around 283 families residing there. The complex became a Zero Waste society last year with the inauguration of an organic waste composter. A sum of 12 lakh was spent on the project.

The composter, with a daily intake capacity of 500kg, produces approximately 40,000kg compost every year.

Nirvana Country, an upscale residential colony in Sector 50, recycles 60% kitchen waste and 30% dry waste and has become a waste-free society by achieving 85% segregation.

“We are actively working in waste management for the last two years and now we are turning 500kg of waste into manure. Any resident can get up to 5kg of free manure from us,” said Sudheer Kumar, estate manager, Nirvana Country.
