In what appears to be a case of personal rivalry, a group of 15 students allegedly assaulted four of their collegemates with sticks and rods on the campus of a private university in Manesar on Tuesday.
The four third-year students suffered minor injuries and were rushed to a nearby private hospital. One of them was injured in the head and needed two stitches, doctors said.
According to the police, all students were of Amity International in Manesar, 20km from Gurgaon city. The group of 15 students entered the campus and was looking for Ankur, a third-year BTech student. They caught hold of him and started beating him.
Seeing this, three of Ankur’s friends intervened but the group beat them up too.
“I was leaving the campus when I saw a group of students hitting four students with sticks and rods. I and my friends wanted to help them but we didn’t have the courage. The group was beating them up brutally. Even the security guards did not intervene,” an eyewitness and student of the university said.
The group had left the campus by the time the police reached. The police rushed the injured students to Rockland Hospital, where they were administered first-aid.
Meanwhile, a student said the two groups have had several fights in the past.
The police have booked the group for rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. They have also asked the university to submit CCTV footage and details of the students involved in the ruckus.
“A case has been registered against the group for assaulting Ankur and his friends. We are investigating to know the reason behind the attack,” said head constable Amit Kumar of Manesar police station, who is probing the case.
University officials said they will set up a committee on Thursday to probe the matter. “As Wednesday was a holiday, the university will investigate the matter on Thursday. The committee will take action against the students involved.”
