Two accused were booked for fraudulently obtaining a loan from a private finance company in Gurugram using forged documents, while the other two were employees of a third party company, who conducted a false background verification to help the applicants secure loans, police said.

The cyber crime cell of Gurugram police on Wednesday booked four people, including a man who posed as an engineer, on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust for securing a loan through fraudulent means.

Police said the direct selling associates of the finance company, in both the cases, had created false verification report, allegedly in connivance with loan applicants, to help them secure loans.(Picture for representation)

The fraud was detected when the Equated Monthly Installments (EMI) cheques for the loans bounced and an investigation revealed that the accused had submitted forged documents, including fake salary slips, PAN, Aadhaar, employee IDs, police said.

Police said that in February, a Meerut resident approached the finance company for a loan of 4.5 lakh and was granted a loan 3 lakh after verification of his documents on March 5. A police officer privy to the matter said the accused submitted fake documents, posing as a staff engineer working with a firm in Greater Noida and even submitted a fake salary slip in order to secure the loan.

“During investigation, it was found that the accused was not a tenant and had never stayed at the rented accommodation in Ghaziabad, as mentioned in documents. Neither was he an employee of the firm as was mentioned in the documents,” the officer said.

Another loan application was filed at the company by a Ghaziabad resident in January, who too claimed to be working for the same firm in Greater Noida as a staff engineer. “His loan application for 1.5 lakh, made through a mobile application, was sanctioned after due process. Later, when his cheques bounced, it was found that he had also provided fake documents. He was not an employee of the company concerned and had never stayed as a tenant at the address mentioned in the documents,” the officer said.

Police said the direct selling associates of the finance company, in both the cases, had created false verification report, allegedly in connivance with loan applicants, to help them secure loans. On the complaint of the finance company, a case was registered on Wednesday at Cyber crime police station under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code and section 66 D of the Information Technology (amendment) Act, police said.
