The incident took place between 11am and 12:20am when Dinesh Kumar Yadav, a resident of Sector 10, reached the house of the suspect and requested him to return his money.

In his suicide note, Yadav said he was taking his life because the suspect and his wife were harassing him and not returning his money, police said.

According to the police, Yadav was in debt and allegedly being harassed by lenders, following which he tried to pressure the suspect. When he went to demand his money, the suspect’s wife allegedly threatened to book him in a false rape case.

The Sector 40 police station on Wednesday registered a case under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act against the couple, on a complaint by the victim’s brother .

Deepak Yadav, in his complaint, alleged he received a call from the suspect’s wife on Tuesday night around 11pm, alleging that his brother was outside their house and clicked her photograph. She said she would file a complaint against him. “I told them that I will sort the matter out on Wednesday morning. I also told her that I will make him apologise if he has done any such act,” he said. Deepak, in his complaint, also said the woman often told them that if they come to their house asking for money, she would file a fake case rape case against them.

The suspects were identified as Gurpreet Singh and Parminder Kaur, residents of Block Q of South City 1. They will be produced before the court on Thursday, the police said.

Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said that during interrogations, the suspect revealed he is a bookie and had financial transactions with the deceased. “The suspect confessed that he had to return the money, but had suffered huge losses in wagers, due to which he was unable to pay the money back,” he said.

The police said the suicide note, of which HT has a copy, mentioned that Dinesh had lent 50 lakh to Gurpreet Singh on February 7, 2016. He also wrote that he visited the suspect’s house in South City 1 many times, but he would delay each time.

Dinesh shot himself with a country-made pistol, and the police said they are investigating where he got the pistol from.

Singh said they are analysing call records of the deceased and questioning family and acquaintances.

“A police team found him lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a trauma centre where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” Singh said. The police said the deceased was also a guarantor for the accused in betting.

An autopsy will be conducted on Thursday after Dinesh’s family members who are out of station return to the city

The deceased is survived by his wife and one minor child.
