The police on Wednesday began a probe into an alleged fraud in vehicle registration after two cars with identical number plates were found at the district court complex here.
Manoj Kumar, an advocate in Gurgaon court, was in for a shock when he saw a white Swift Dzire car having a number plate similar to that on a silver colour car of the same model owned by his relative, a resident of Sector 31, Gurgaon.
Kumar became suspicious to see the car having registration number HR 26 BP 8880 parked in the parking lot of the court premises. He called the police and also asked his relative to bring his car to the court.
According to the police, the vehicle registration certificate produced by Sunil Kumar, a resident of Wazirabad village, was found to be fake.
Both the cars were taken to Khandsa police post but the car owners were allowed to go after Sunil confessed that he got the registration certificate from a tout in May last year and was not aware that the document was forged.
The police said an FIR will be lodged after proper investigation. Pankaj Soni, in whose name the original registration is recorded, expressed relief, saying, “I could have landed in some trouble, if the other car was involved into any offence.”
