The students alleged that the university was unnecessarily charging students a sports fee of Rs 10,000 per annum even though there are no sports facilities available on the campus of Ansal University.

Hundreds of students of a private university in Sector 55 held a protest on Tuesday against what they termed as “ extra fee and fine being collected by the university while not providing the promised facilities”.

The students alleged that the university was unnecessarily charging students a sports fee of Rs 10,000 per annum even though there are no sports facilities available on the campus of Ansal University.

The students alleged that the university was unnecessarily charging students for carry-over papers in their internal exams. “If we are unable to clear the internal papers, we should be allowed to write it again. The university charges Rs 5,000 per paper, including the internal exam papers. If we don’t pay, we cannot write exams in the upcoming semester,” said Deepika Arora, a first-year student.

“We have to get our own bat or volleyball if we want to play. The ground is often rented out for corporate events,” said Happy Dalal, first-year student.

They also opposed the system of marking a student absent if he is late even by a minute. “The administration is being unreasonable. Even if a student is late by just two minutes, they mark us absent for the whole day,” one of the students said.

“The university does not have regular faculty and the lecturers keep changing which affects in our performance and the syllabus is never completed. There is no structure to the BTech course and we are facing great difficulties in studying on our own,” said Hemant Kumar, a final-year BTech student.

“The university charges a development fee of Rs 60,000 but there is no development happening on the campus. There are no lab equipment and we are left to manage on our own,” said Amit Nagar, a final-year student.

The group of graduate students alleged that none of them got placements as no campus placement programmes were organised for students.

“Our parents had taken huge loans to make us engineers and we are not able to get jobs as the university did not take any interest in getting us placements,” said Yogendra Pal, a graduate of the college.

Students also said if the management does not concede to their demands, they will not attend classes.

The university has refuted all allegations made by the students and said the students who are staging the protest are “non-performers who have not yet cleared their examination papers”.

“It is very unfortunate that such a protest has taken place outside the campus. A handful of graduate students came to create a nuisance for reasons best known to them. Despite being invited by the university authorities, no student came forward to put forth any grievance to the university management. We are happy to work with our students to resolve any issue and we look forward to having a good discussion,” said Dr Sona Vikas, university spokesperson.
