Smokers are up to four times as likely to become blind in later life than non-smokers, says new study.

Those lighting up, need to take a pause! New research reveals that smokers are up to four times as likely to become blind in later life from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) than non-smokers.

The finding published in the current issue of the 'British Medical Journal' has observed that many smokers remain ignorant of the risk caused by lighting a fag.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of adult blindness, resulting in severe irreversible loss of central vision.

Eevry one out of five cases of AMD in the UK can be attributed to smoking. Evidence also shows that quitting smoking slows the development of age-related macular degeneration, whereas continued smoking can affect the long-term response to treatments such as laser therapy.
