Apart from curing various diseases, citrus fruits like lemon and orange keep one hydrated during harsh weather conditions, writes Renu Khandelwal.

Lemon is considered as a freshener and a health remedy since the time of the Mughals. Modern studies have further emphasized its use. It has the properties of cooling the body as well.

Dr. Rachna Sethi, a healthcare expert, says, "If we take half a spoon of Lemon zest daily in the morning, it helps in digestion and keeps the liver clean. People who drink lemon juice daily have healthy and glowing skin. Drinking simmering water first thing in the morning with one-tablespoon lemon juice and honey can help one reduce weight."

Experts also feel it is necessary to take fluids on a regular basis in order to prevent dehydration.

Dr. Shikha Sharma voices a similar opinion. "According to ayurveda, lemon juice helps to open the channels. It is recommended for various deficiencies, since it is full of vitamin C and protects from disease scurvy. It is very useful during pregnancy and for the people having jaundice and nausea. Lemon with dal helps in digestion. There is little sodium in it, so the fruit is good for those on a low salt diet. Lemon and sugar also works as a body scrub."

Dr. Jugal Kishore opines, "Citrus fruits like orange and lemon are packed with Vitamin C, an antioxidant that promotes cell repair and growth. It protects the eyes from the harsh effects of the sun and maintains the robustness of skin to prevent wrinkles. Drink lots of nimboo pani, add a dash of lemon to dals, snack on fresh oranges, melons and berries. Tomatoes and red peppers are also rich in Vitamin C."
