Vagina means a sheath. It is a potential space that can expand as the need arises. Remember that the baby is delivered normally via the vaginal opening. Thus, it has tremendous expansion capacity. The vagina can definitely hold the male penis, even when fully erect. In literature, pain has been reported in the initial few sexual encounters. The term ‘Vaginismus’ is used to define the phenomenon of contractions of the vagina, whenever any attempt is made to enter the potential space. This may be due to organic lesions like infection, tumour, injury or psychological reasons.

The fear of loosing virginity, fear of pain, fear of sex are few of the psychological reasons for ‘Vaginismus’. Some are benefitted, with the use of anaesthetic jelly like lignocaine. In a few severe cases, gradual dilatation with the help of dilators may be required. A person who has never had a sexual encounter is called a virgin. Erroneous belief that pain occurs during the first sexual experience may be the basis for this myth. Virgin status has no relation with vagina dimensions.
