Golden Globes 2020 highlights: Joaquin Phoenix wins for Joker, 1917 is Best Picture, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas present

Hollywood's biggest party, the Golden Globes, kicked off the showbiz awards season Monday morning. The ceremony took place, as always, at the Beverly Hills hotel, and was hosted by Ricky Gervais for the fifth time.1917, the war drama directed by Sam Mendes, won the Best Picture - Drama award, edging out three Netflix films -- The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes -- and the comic book drama Joker. 1917 has reportedly been stitched together from 40 takes, to give the impression of one continuous, unbroken shot. Mendes also picked up the Best Director award for 1917, edging out Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Quentin Tarantino and Bong Joon-ho in a surprise win. Bong’s South Korean black comedy Parasite bagged the award for best foreign language film. Russell Crowe and Phoebe Waller-Bridge picked up early TV acting wins, with the Best Drama show award going to HBO’s Succession and Best Comedy show going to Fleabag. Brian Cox also won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama award for his performance in the HBO show. Olivia Colman won the Globe for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of Netflix’s The Crown.Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres were presented with the honorary Cecil B DeMille and Carol Burnett awards, respectively. Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino picked up wins for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which also won the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy award, while Leonardo DiCaprio lost out to Taron Egerton in the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy category. Other nominees include Ana de Armas, Emma Thompson, Beanie Feldstein and Cate Blanchett. This is the first time an east Asian has won a lead actor award at the Globes, for a film.

Taron Egerton pulls off a surprise win for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. He played Elton John in the musical biopic Rocketman. Egerton beat out Daniel Craig, Leonardo DiCaprio, Eddie Murphy and Roman Griffin Davis.

Brad Pitt wins the Best Supporting Actor award (and gets the biggest cheer of the show) for his performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Pitt’s fellow nominees in the category included Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino.

Actor Michelle Williams wins the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, for her performance in the FX show, Fosse/Verdon. Other nominees included Kaitlyn Dever, Joey King, Merritt Weaver and Helen Mirren. “Women, please vote in your own self-interests. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don’t forget: we are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us,” Williams said in her speech.

The red carpet event kicks off

The stage is set and the red carpet laid out for the 77th Golden Globe Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra was all decked up as she joined her singer-actor husband Nick Jonas at the event. They are also two of the many presenters of the night.
