This comes amid increasing tension in the Kashmir Valley between civilians and security forces following a series of videos that allegedly showed human rights excesses by security forces.

The bullet-riddled body of a young Indian Army officer hailing from Kashmir was found in Shopian district on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said Fayaz was missing since Tuesday night and may have been abducted by militants but the family did not inform the authorities. “They must have thought he would be released.”

Calling it a “dastardly act”, the Indian Army, in a statement said it “salutes the braveheart and stands by the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy”.

The army said it was committed “to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice”.

It said “some unidentified terrorists” abducted and killed the officer, who was in his native place on leave to attend a wedding in the family.

Commissioned in 2016, the officer was presently serving in Akhnoor.

Residents of Kashmir took to social media to condemn the killing of the army officer.

The killing of the army officer comes just a few days after militants killed five policemen and two bank guards in an attack on a cash van in Phambai area of Kulgam. The five Jammu and Kashmir policemen and the two guards killed in the attack were locals.

The incident also comes amid increasing tension in the Valley between civilians and security forces following a series of videos that allegedly showed human rights excesses by security forces.

Last week, a Pakistani army team killed and beheaded two security personnel, triggering outrage across the country and prompting the government to vow a strong response.
