Delhi Election Results 2020 Highlights| AAP returns to power in Delhi, party promises not to let down city

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made a clean sweep in Delhi assembly election winning 62 seats in the 70-member House. The BJP was in second spot having won eight seats. The Congress, which drew a blank the last time, again failed to open its account. Counting of votes for the February 8 polls was held on Tuesday at 21 centres across the city. The final voting percentage in the polls was 62.59%.In Delhi’s 70-seat assembly, there are 58 general seats and 12 reserved seats.Chief minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal retained his New Delhi seat. His deputy Manish Sisodia also won again from the Patparganj seat. Several political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate Kejriwal, who had in the run-up to the polls repositioned himself as a person focussing on the welfare of the people from being a person always at loggerheads with the authorities.

Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra has taken responsibilty for the party’s debacle in the assembly election, Speaking to news agency ANI, Chopra said, “I take the responsibility for the debacle of the party in Delhi Assembly Polls. The last result in the Delhi Assembly election has gone in favour of the ruling AAP. The party has won the Timarpur seat, taking its final tally to 62 in the 70-member assembly. AAP’s Dilip Pandey defeated BJP’s Surinder Pal Singh (Bittoo) by 24144 votes.

BJP’s Ramvir Singh Bidhuri has won the Badarpur assembly seat. In a closely-fought election, he defeated AAP’s Ram Singh Netaji by 3719 votes. The saffron party has wrested this seat from the AAP which won it in 2015.

With this, BJP has won eight seats in the Delhi assembly election. It is a distant second to the ruling AAP which looks set to win 62 seats.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal received his MLA Certificate from the Returning Officer of the New Delhi constituency. The AAP convener retained his assembly seat, defeating BJP’s Sunil Kumar Yadav by 21,697 votes. Kejriwal had won from the New Delhi seat by 31, 583 votes in 2015.

Kailash Gahlot retains Najafgarh, improves victory margin

Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kailash Gahlot has won from the Najafgarh constituency. The Delhi transport minister defeated Ajeet Singh Kharkhari of the BJP by 6,231 votes in one of the last few results to be declared in the Delhi assembly poll.

Gahlot has improved his victory margin this time, having won by just 1,555 votes in 2015.

BJP’s Jitender Mahajan has defeated his nearest rival, Sarita Singh of AAP, to win the Rohtas Nagar seat. Mahajan won by 13, 241 votes. Singh was the sitting MLA in this east Delhi assembly constituency.

Reacting to the AAP victory in Delhi assembly polls, former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar on Tuesday said people have rejected both the BJP and the Congress, and opted for a third alternative.

“Delhi assembly poll results have shown that people have rejected the main national parties, the BJP and the Congress. While people have seen policies of the BJP and are fed up with them, they are not seeing any hope in the Congress as an alternative. Aam Aadmi Party’s Parlad Singh Sawhney has won from the Chandni Chowk seat, defeating his nearest rival, BJP’s Suman Kumar Gupta by 29, 584 votes. The party has won this seat in 2015 also but Alka Lamba was the winning candidate for the party.

This time, though, Lamba contested from here on a Congress ticket and was a distant third.

Reacting to trends showing AAP’s leads in Delhi’s 58 constituencies, former Janata Dal-United (JDU) vice-president Prashant Kishor thanked the people of Delhi for “standing up to protect” the country’s soul.

“Thank you, Delhi for standing up to protect the soul of India!” he tweeted.

Kishor was expelled from JD(U), a short while ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, following a tiff with party chief and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Deputy commissioner of police, Sharat Sinha said the strength of Delhi Police each centre will have up to at least 500 personnel on the day of counting, including senior officers of the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP).
