Government on Monday waived off parking charges at airports across the country till midnight of November 21, as commuters were unable to tender exact change following demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
The move will come into effect from November 14 midnight.
The directive is applicable for both public and privately operated airports.
An official statement from the ministry of civil aviation confirmed the news. The step was taken to facilitate smooth movement of passengers, the ministry said.
There are 75 functional airports in India including six run under joint ventures.
“Airports Authority of India as per the government guidelines has decided not to charge parking fee for seven days starting from midnight tonight,” an AAI official said.
Financial compensation for private companies running parking areas will be discussed later, the official added.
The move comes after the government withdrew Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as part of a crackdown against black money. People are facing tough time in swapping their demonetised notes for new notes due to various reasons.
