‘Unjustified’: SC tells High Court to hear FIRs for hate speeches plea on Friday

The Supreme Court is hearing petitions filed by 10 riot victims and social activist Harsh Mander.

But the Supreme Court also concurred that it was unjustified for the Delhi High Court to put off its hearing by four weeks.

In his ruling, Chief Justice Bobde told the high court to advance the scheduled date of hearing to Friday and decide the requests for FIRs as expeditiously as possible.

The high court had, on February 29, given the government four weeks to respond to the petition that wanted the police to register FIRs against hate speeches.

The court allowed this time after Solicitor General Mehta told the court that the atmosphere was “not conducive” to file cases at the moment.

Mehta echoed a similar concern on Wednesday when the Supreme Court was hearing the petition.
