Lok Sabha election 2019: Badruddin Ajmal aims to retain Assam’s Dhubri seat

AIUDF founder Badruddin Ajmal won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2014 with a handsome margin.

Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency in western Assam is spread across Dhubri, Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) founder Badruddin Ajmal won the seat in 2014 defeating his Congress rival Wazed Ali Choudhury by over two lakh votes.

Ajmal will contest from Dhubri this time also but having lost the .Assembly election in 2016 from Salmara constituency, he may not be on a very strong wicket this time. Polling will take place in April 23.

The AIUDF in Assam has eroded the Congress base among immigrant Muslim voters. Dhubri is a Muslim-majority constituency.

Parts of the constituency are riverine areas along the Brahmaputra river. The economy is largely agrarian.

According to the 2011 census, the constituency’s population is 2771883 out of which 89.1% is rural and 10.9% is urban population. The Scheduled castes (SC) and Scheduled tribes (ST) ratio is 3.54 and 5.78, respectively out of total population.
