TMC emergency meeting: Mamata forms 20-member nat'l panel to ease tension

Earlier in the day, some of the senior leaders and ministers held a meeting among themselves before heading for Mamata's Kalighat residence.

An emergency meeting called by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was underway at her south Kolkata residence on Saturday. The meeting was called amid internal ramblings over an alleged power struggle.

Senior party leaders, including the Bengal chief minister's MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee, were attending the meeting.

According to reports, education leader Partha Chatterjee said the TMC supremo formed 20-member national working committee of the party. The committee would include Amit Mitra, Yashwant Sinha and Firhad Hakim, besides Abhishek and Chatterjee. However, MPs Derek O'Brien and Saugata Roy are reportedly not a part of the new committee, an ANI i.

"After Mamata Banerjee was re-elected as the chairperson of the party, she had announced a small committee to look after party affairs. Today, there was a meeting of that committee, and in that meeting, she has announced the new national working committee of the party," Chatterjee was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

"Till Mamata Banerjee announces the new list of office bearers, all the other posts of the last committee cease to exist," another senior TMC leader.

Some of the issues likely to be discussed at the meeting are current bickering within the party over the 'one-man one-post' policy and the ruling camp’s ties with the Prashant Kishor-headed I-PAC.

Besides, concerns over the candidate list released for the upcoming municipal elections in the state could come up for talks. Many of the top leaders are said to be unhappy with the distribution of tickets for the municipal polls.
