Superintendent of police, Sopore, Javaid Iqbal, said the militants barged into Mohammad Ashraf Mir’s home in the Harwan area of Sopore in Baramulla district and opened fire. “He was hit by five bullets and died before reaching the hospital in Sopore. His wife is injured in both legs and has been referred to Srinagar,” he said.

The motive behind the killing was not yet clear.

The officials said Mir used to work as a driver and was also involved in fruit business. He said that police suspect the involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba militants including some foreigners.

The killing in Sopore comes four days after the bullet-riddled bodies of three young men were found in Baramulla’s old town. Police suspect that Asif Ahmad Sheikh, Haseeb Ahmad Khan and Mohammad Asgar were killed by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants on Monday night.

Separatists condemned the killings, saying any killing on grounds of political or party affiliations was inhuman and unacceptable.

“Time and again people are killed in such a manner and no one knows who kills them as the killers remain unidentified gunmen. While the state authorities conveniently blame armed youth, the militant organisations in fact condemn the killings and many times blame state agencies. In the process, the culprits never get identified,” the statement by the separatists Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had said.

Hours earlier on Friday, suspected militants threw a grenade outside a police station Pulwama in south Kashmir. No one was injured in the explosion.
