Reliance Jio data leak: Computer course dropout arrested from Rajasthan, will soon be brought to Mumbai

Forensic analysis is under way to find out if Jio’s database has been leaked and how the accused managed to get his hands on the data.

The Maharashtra police have arrested a computer course dropout from Rajasthan for allegedly leaking database of Reliance Jio customers on a website.

He will be produced in a court in Rajasthan for transit remand and will then be brought to Navi Mumbai.

Forensic analysis is under way to find out if Jio’s database has been leaked and how the accused managed to get his hands on the data.

News of a data leak went viral on the internet on Sunday after a news report saying data of Jio customers was available on Magicapk.com.

While some of them who accessed the site claimed to have seen their personal data including AADHAR card details, others said they did not find anything. Now the site is unavailable.

A Jio spokesperson said the data on the website appeared to be “unauthentic.” She added the company’s subscriber data was safe and maintained with the highest security.

Reliance Jio owned by Mukesh Ambani registered a FIR with the Navi Mumbai police under section 379 (theft) of the IPC and section 43 (2) (data theft - downloads, copies or extracts any data, computer data base or information from such computer, computer system or computer network including information or data held or stored in any removable storage medium) and 66 (computer related offences) of the Information Technology Act.

The arrested accused is identified as Imran Chhimpa, in his 30s, a resident of Sujangarh in Churu district, Rajasthan. Chimmpa studied for a Bachelor of Computer Science degree but dropped out.

Chimmpa owns the website and started it in May.
