Tribal youth commits suicide in police custody in Odisha
Abinash Munda of Bhalupali village, detained a day earlier for suspected involvement in a theft case, was found hanging with a bed sheet inside the lockup of Ainthapalli police station.
A tribal youth, arrested in connection with a theft case, allegedly hanged himself to death in a police station in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Thursday night.
Abinash Munda of Bhalupali village, detained a day earlier for suspected involvement in a theft case, was found hanging with a bed sheet inside the lockup of Ainthapalli police station.
Sambalpur SP Sanjiv Arora said the post-mortem will be videographed as per the guidelines of National Human Rights Commission, he said.
Munda’s family members alleged that the cops’ torture led to his suicide. His father alleged that though the police had promised him to send his son back home after interrogation, they did not.
Police took the body to the district headquarter hospital and conducted inquest in the presence of magistrate and family members. Later, the body was sent VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla for post mortem.
Officials said Munda was picked up after Ranjan Panda complained that several gold ornaments that his daughter had received during the marriage function were missing.
Police had picked up Munda and found some of the missing jewellery from his house.
In May last year, a youth of Sambalpur, too, died under mysterious circumstances in police custody. The youth, Abhaya Singh was picked up along with two others over suspicion of stealing mobiles and then let them off. The police later charged him and others with smuggling of cannabis after which he was again picked up. He died in a hospital a month later, after he was reportedly subjected to police torture.
