1,000 anti-POSCO rallyists detained

Police near the South Korean steel major's proposed plant site detained nearly 1,000 anti-POSCO project activists while they were proceeding to participate in a rally.

Police near the South Korean steel major's proposed plant site detained nearly 1,000 anti-POSCO project activists on Tuesday while they were proceeding to participate in a rally.

"A large number of activists proceeding for the rally were stopped at various points and detained at Balia college near here as part of the step to prevet any untowward incident and law and order problem," Jagatsinghpur district SP RK Sharma said.

While 300 were detained at Balia College, as many at Badabandha railway station in Jajpur district and about 200 CPI workers from Bhubaneswar and 150 from Ganjam district were held at the same station, police said. Prohibitory orders under section 144 CRPC have already been imposed in and around Balitutha area where the rallyists planned to converge.

The rally, christened as Bikalpa Bikash Samavesha, has been organised by POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), which has been spearheading an agitation against the 12 MTPA greenfield project proposed to be set up by the South Korean steel major.
