10 civilians killed, 89 injured in firing by Pak along IB

Ten civilians lost their lives while 89 others were injured in firing and shelling by Pakistan along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region between January 2014 and February this year.

Replying to a question Minister for Horticulture, Haj and Aquaf, Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that 10 civilians have lost their lives and 89 were injured in Arnia, RS Pura, Hira Nagar and Savjian in firing and shelling between January 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015.

The Minister said large number of families who were displaced due to firing from across the border were provide temporary shelter in Government buildings or private houses where all basic amenities like health care, power, food, blankets, temporary toilet, sanitation and drinking water facility were made available to them.

He said ex-gratia has also been provided out of District Red Cross Society Funds for the loss of livestocks.

The Minister further said for providing security to the border population at the time of firing from across the border, a revised proposal for construction of community type bunkers in identified border villages spread across the districts of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch has been submitted to the Centre which has been pursued accordingly.

Veeri said government has also submitted a proposal to the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs for bringing uniformity in the payment of compensation for death as well as permanent disability due to firing on IB/LoC in respect of persons other than government employees.

"In the said proposal, loss of live-stock has also been proposed to be brought under the ex-gratia scheme. Matter is under consideration of the Government of India", he said.

The member of the house Ghulam Nabi Monga, Ajay Sadhotra, Jehangir Hussain Mir, Vibodh Gupta, Yashpal Sharma, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Dr Shehnaz Ganai raised supplementaries.
