An unemployed man in Bihar who married six women in 10 years by pretending to be an intelligence bureau officer has landed in jail, exposed by his sixth wife.
Serial groom Vijay Kumar Singh, 35, had managed to keep all his marriages intact — and his wives unaware of each other — for years, as he lived off their dowry and money, but met his match in Poonam whom he married in March.
Poonam, daughter of a bank employee, handed Singh over to the police at Dalmianagar in Rohtas district on Saturday. Poonam had grown suspicious after he received several late-night phone calls from women.
She contacted some of the women and they turned out to be her husband’s wives. Alerted by Poonam, Singh’s first wife, Nita, and second wife, Pushpa, reached the Dalmianagar police station on Sunday to see the man who had toyed with their hearts and money taken to jail.
“Never before in my career have I come across anything like this,” Rohtas SP Manu Maharaj said on Monday.
According to the police, Singh spent one or two months with each wife in a year, saying he had managed to secure leave with great difficulty. Singh brushed off queries about his family by claiming he undertook secret missions for IB and had to conceal the identity of his next of kin.
Singh and Nita married in 2002 — when he had just completed his BA — and have three daughters. He does not have children with the other wives, four of whom live with their parents.
Nita said, “What I thought was love has turned out to be confidence trickery. What future do my daughters have?”
